It's an outing that has special meaning for me, since it will be with three young participants in the wonderful Big Brothers and Big Sisters programs and their mentors. Seeing young kids get a meaningful exposure to the world of deer hunting should provide both story opportunities aplenty and meaningful memories. November 2004Nov. 17-21 – Muzzleloader hunting for deer in Alabama with noted hunter and seminar speaker Eddie Salter. A long-time friend and hunting buddy of Jim’s, Eddie is a member of the Hunter’s Specialties pro staff. Nov. 12-15 – Deer hunting in Missouri with my good buddy, Ernie Calandrelli, who handles public relations for Quaker Boy Game Calls, and other folks from the Quaker Boy crew. After seeing the area's impressive deer a number of times over the years while hunting turkeys in the spring with Ernie, I finally twisted his arm enough to convince him to extend an invitation. Of course, the prospects of a meal featuring his incomparable clam linguine simply add to the appeal of the trip. October 2004Oct. 28-31 – Jim will be joining a number of noted collectors of turkey calls at Turkey Trot Acres in New York for a few days of fall turkey hunting (with dogs – a delight anyone unfamiliar with it needs to experience) and talk about the collectibles of this sport. This year’s event, where Remington showcases its new products for the coming year, will be held at buck Ridge Plantation near Orangeburg, S.C. Oct. 3-10 – Jim and Ann, his wife, will be in Springfield, Mo. for the annual meeting of the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association, an organization of which Jim is a past president. While there Jim will also get in a couple of days of hunting. September 2004Sept. 14-21 – Jim will be hunting, fishing, and listening to elk bugle in Montana’s lovely Charlie Russell country. Sept. 9 – Talk on Horace Kephart, the “Dean of American Campers,” at 7:00 p.m. at the Marianna Black Library, Bryson City, North Carolina. Free admission. Jim is a recognized authority on Kephart, who spent the final 27 years of his career in the little high country town of Bryson City. This was Jim’s birthplace, and this occasion, a presentation in the “North Carolina Reads” program, is especially notable for him. His mother was librarian at the Marianna Black Library for many years, and it is named for its founder, a wonderful lady who was Jim’s next-door neighbor during his boyhood years. For more information, see Jim’s lengthy introduction to the reprint of Kephart’s Camping & Woodcraft (signed copies available through the books section of this web site) or his recent article on him, “Horace Kephart: The Man and the Myths,” in the summer issue of Smoky Mountain Living magazine. Sept. 4 – Opening day of dove season in South Carolina. As he has done for two decades, Jim will join family and friends in nearby Fort Lawn, South Carolina for participation in an annual ritual that combines sport, the wonderful food normally associated with family reunions, renewal of friendships, and wholesome fun gunning for grey-winged speedsters. August 2004Aug. 24-29 – Jim will be enjoying his annual “dog days” of summer pilgrimage to West Virginia for fly fishing. This year’s itinerary includes two days of floating the fabled New River casting popping bugs for smallmouth bass, a day of wading a smaller stream for smallmouth, and casting in tumbling waters of small mountain streams for brookies and browns. For those of you who love the long rod and whistling line, West Virginia can offer some wonderful, often overlooked action. Aug. 14-15 – Teaching “Fly Fishing in the Smokies” at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s visitor center at Sugarlands, near Gatlinburg, Tennessee. This is a course in the University of Tennessee’s Smoky Mountain Field School. Jim offers several weekend fly fishing schools, along with a one-day course on “Writing on Nature and the Outdoors” and a backpacking course, “In the Footsteps of Horace Kephart,” in the Field School. For details on all the Smoky Mountain Field School’s offerings, visit www.outreach.utk.edu/smoky. July 2004July 29 – Aug. 1 – Speaking Engagement at the Deer & Turkey Exposition w/ Booth in Nashville, Tennessee. |
